The focus point is on the President Barack Obama Speech that was delivered on the sixth state of the union. The speech is referred to as the Sixth State of the Union Address and was delivered on the 20th January, 2015. The speech addresses numerous significant issues, mainly highlighting on the success of the Obama administration, and the intended efforts to improve America (Kiely et al., 2015). There exists a number of statements in the speech that can be Fact-checked.

The first aspect addressed by the president relates to the economic features of the economy. Like any other nation in the world, the United States significantly suffered from the 2008 financial crisis. The address indicates that America has endured severe challenges, but the country has emerged victoriously due to the efforts of the Americans (Barack Obama, Pg. 2-3). This recovery is viewed a strength binding the State of the Union and provide the incentive to look ahead:

“At this moment — with a growing economy, shrinking deficits, bustling industry, booming energy production — we have risen from recession freer to write our own future than any other nation on Earth. It’s now up to us to choose who we want to be over the next 15 years and for decades to come.” (Barack Obama, Pg. 2)

The facts indicate that through all the metrics available for measuring economic growth, the US economy is still on the recovery stage of the financial crisis. For instance, it is true that unemployment has been declining, but the decline is supported by low paying jobs as well as part-time jobs. Comparing the pre and post-recession periods, there are 1.7 million fewer workers in full-time employment in the post period than in the pre-period (Kiely et al., 2015). The president indicates the success on wage increments, which is only pegged on plans made by employers. The falls short of success in the economy of plans can highly remain unexecuted. There is progress in energy production; however, the Obama administration cannot take the full credit as it was a long-term objective set and facilitated by President Obama predecessors (Kiely et al., 2015).

Secondly, the aspect of education arises in the speech. Obama administration has an excellent idea to eliminate the cost of education in community colleges. The idea is to follow the examples set by the Tennessee and Chicago states and make two years of college free and universal (Barack Obama, Pg. 4-5). This project will be built on the foundation of free and universal high school education.

The facts indicate that the community colleges are critical to the future success. Currently, more than 1100 community colleges enroll more than 40% of the Americas student population. This is attributed to their affordability and flexibility from the learners’ point of view. Additionally, data indicates that there is a need to increase access to higher learning institutions. It is estimated that in 2020, 35% and 30% of job openings will require a bachelor degree and an associate (college) degree respectively (Kiely et al., 2015). The administration will need the nod from the Congress to implement proposal:

“By the end of this decade, two in three job openings will require some higher education – two in three. And yet, we still live in a country where too many bright, striving Americans are priced out of the education they need. It’s not fair to them, and it’s sure not smart for our future. That’s why I’m sending this Congress a bold new plan to lower the cost of community college — to zero.” (Barack Obama, Pg. 5)

The facts indicate that this proposal is bold but is faced with two significant challenges. One, the current Congress is Republican dominated. This fact poses a challenge when Obama faces the congress, as the congressmen question the costs of the program. Two, the program requires States acceptance. Acceptance of the States is pegged on the States willingnes and ability to fund approximately 25% of the proposal cost (Kiely et al., 2015). The difficulty can be established from historical experience. Numerous States didn’t expand their medical aid and the Obama health care law, despite the fact that the federal government was financing the entire cost of the health program in the first years.

Thirdly, the aspects of the environment and climate arise in the speech. Obama highlights the success of his administration in fighting climate change through innovative ways of producing energy (Barack Obama, Pg. 11). On environmental matters the leadership boasts some significant efforts public land preservation:

“That’s why we’ve set aside more public lands and waters than any administration in history.” (Barack Obama, Pg. 11)

The facts indicate that before the expansion, Obama had performed dismally on land preservation in comparison to his predecessors. However, Obama successfully expanded the Pacific Remote Islands National Monument to the excess of 490,000 square miles from 87,000 square miles. These efforts put Obama at the leading sea of conservation, but this success has no great impact on the US. The preservation prohibits all extraction of underwater resources and deep sea mining as well as commercial fishing (Kiely et al., 2015). However, little fishing and drilling occur in the water areas preserved.

The fact check opens up the Obama speech on Sixth State of the Union Address. The speech massively glorifies significant efforts made by the Obama administration. Although, these efforts are genuine and real, the reporting of the facts is somehow exaggerated. In addition the speech highlights some critical proposals; however, these projects face potential challenges that will hinder their success.
