Bullying can be defined as the mental and physical torture imparted onto an individual by another individual on account of superiority in strength, age or position. More often than not, the bully regards himself as being better than his victim and often loves to remind the victim of his inferior position in the particular environment that they are in. Bullying may occur anywhere from schools to workplaces. Bullying is also experienced in correctional facilities such as prison and juvenile detention centres. In the current age of technological advancements, cyber bullying is becoming a notorious force to combat as it is mainly anonymous and often used as a source of humiliation for the victim. School bullying occurs within the confines of an educational institution. Bullying in schools is a matter that has been in contention for many years but still remains unresolved. The notion behind bullying is that certain students lack specific qualities that mark a student as being popular or outstanding be it in sports or academia. Such students then become a source of ridicule and scorn. For this reason, students found to be “outsiders” in relation to the perspective of popularity among the members of the learning institution are stigmatized and bullied. Bullying is a practice that results in lowering an individual’s self-esteem and self-worth and may have extreme psychological effects such as depression and suicidal tendencies. The act of bullying is wrong in every possible way and it is more so an infringement of basic human rights. This paper sets out to present the causes of bullying as well as the aftermath of bullying with the view to persuade against bullying especially in schools.

We have written argumentative essay on bullying

Bullying comes from the underlying need of an individual to feel superior as compared to others in a social setting. When such ego is at work, the victim to the bullying may suffer both physically and emotional abuse and torture as a consequence. Bullying may also extend to sexual and verbal abuse. At times, one may not be conscious of the fact that they may be bullying a fellow individual. In a school setting, the more popular students tend to pick on the less popular students in their midst all for the sake of sheer fun and indulgence. The main causes of bullying are mostly psychological. In many cases, a bully maybe one who is ridden with psychological torture such that they intend to pass it on to others in the society. In cases of young delinquents, the teenagers often feel the need to let out the rage they feel as a result of their violent backgrounds, hormones and negative influences to mention a few. As a result, they end up exhibiting these feelings through bullying fellow students in school just to make them feel better about themselves. Also, bullying may be fuelled by social differences such as financial disparities and difference in social pedigree. It may also be as a result of racial discrimination and sexual orientation. It is critical to examine the emotions faced by bullies in such circumstances, nevertheless, it is unfair and irrational for such an individual to inflict their psychological deficiencies onto innocent by-standers who also have their own agonies to deal with.

Bullying is an infringement of an individual’s basic human rights. Each member of society has an inherent right to human dignity. This entails that each person has a right to be respected and treated fairly and in a humane manner. Anything that is contrary to this is a violation of such rights that are basic and inherent to every human being in the society. Bullying in schools has however been overlooked over the years and it is not regarded as such a serious issue in most educational institutions reason being that the children are going through the motions of growing up and thus cannot be held accountable for such forms of aggression. It is of great importance that bullying be taken as a serious offence in educational centres as it is demoralizing to the victim and a sign of delinquent behaviour which may lead on to much more aggressive behaviour in the bully if not corrected early enough. There are various types of bullies in a school setting with the difference lying on the extremities of the bullying practice. Bullying may be as minimal as name calling and may extend to even serious physical harm such as bruises and fractures. The most infuriating fact about bullying is that the victim is separated from the herd and tortured for no apparent reason other than the fact that they are seen as inferior and less deserving than the bullies and other students in the school.

Bullying often takes a toll on the victim in a number of ways. Some victims of bullying undergo depression and despondence. Such feelings of being unwanted and unfit in society may extend even in the later years of the victims life and may cause them to have issues of trust in relationships formed in their adult years. The most extreme effect of bullying is suicide and suicidal tendencies. Picture a teenager who is constantly criticized by his or her peers on account of failing to fit in among other students in the school and being tortured as a result. The fact is that such a teenager is already self-conscious about their looks as is every teenager due to hormones brought about by the adolescent stage and the cherry on top makes it hard for the teenager to adjust to the emotions within themselves. As a consequence, the victim may end up taking his or her life just to make the feelings bubbling inside them stop. It is a very sad scenario where a teenager commits suicide just to get away from fellow teenagers who just refuse to leave him or her alone. It is unfathomable than a young life is taken before they have achieved anything of worth in life. Where then is the society leading to? Where is the justice that is to be accorded to such a life taken?

The effects of bullying may also lead to a psychological breakdown in the victim. In this case, the victim may be led to take drastic steps to let the anger and pain out which may lead them to putting others in harm’s way. In 2007, the Virginia Tech shooting, which was the worst school mass murder ever recorded in the United States, was a result of bullying. The victim, being of Asian descent, was bullied on account of the way he talked and his shy disposition. This led him to have a mental breakdown that resulted in thirty two individuals losing their lives that fateful day. Who then is to blame in such a scenario? Can the shooter be labelled a monster or is he a victim? Bullying must not be taken lightly in the society as it may be catastrophic not only for the victim but for the people around them as well.

Statistics reveal that about 40 – 80 percent of school going children in America undergo bullying at one point or another in their school going years. This means that a large number of children at any level in school be it Elementary School, High School or College go through bullying at certain points in their lives. In addition to this, research shows that students who have aligned themselves as being homosexual, bisexual or transgender often miss a fifth of school for fear of being bullied due to their sexual orientation. Measures must be taken so as to discourage bullying in schools.

In light of this, many states in the United States of America are taking initiative to counteract the practice of bullying in the school system. Texas Anti-bullying Laws and Policies have been established and constantly enforced so that every member of the society feels safe and respected without the fear of bullying. The country’s educational system should embark on establishing policies with severe sanctions so as to discourage bullying. In addition to this, the teaching faculty must present a safe learning environment for all students and avoid dwelling too much on overachievers such that the underdog is left out in the cold and vulnerable. The learning institution must be accommodating to each member of the society regardless of their weaknesses and strengths, race and sexual orientation.

In conclusion, it is safe to say that bullying is an ongoing practice that seeks to diminish the self-worth of the victim for the bully’s entertainment. It is cruel treatment and a violation of an individual’s basic human rights. School bullying occurs within a learning institution and may range from verbal abuse to physical torture. The consequences of bullying are severe and may lead to harming not only the victim but people around the victim as well. Bullying must be discouraged as it is degrading and cruel treatment of a human being no matter the age and status of the individual.
